Directing

Stage

I started out as a theatre director, before curiosity got the better of me and prompted me to branch out into all the other things. I direct plays, musicals, operas, contemporary performance, immersive experiences and anything in between. Some of my work has been wildly, unexpectedly successful and some of it has cruised gloriously under the radar.

My work is characterised by a stunning visual aesthetic and strong emotional and psychological dynamics. The theatre I make is stealthily meaningful; it is engaging and enjoyable with a populist streak and compelling emotional dynamics that are underpinned by a robust intellectual framework and an agenda to change the world. I have an eye for intricate detail, a flair for suspenseful, gripping drama and a deep care for the audience.

Right now I’m directing development workshops for my musical Cautionary Tale and doing development work ahead of directing the winning play for the Arch 468 Hope Prize.

Screen

Best Micro Drama - Discover Film Festival

My first screen directing gig was for Stage to Film in New York, directing Chisa Hutchinson’s brilliant micro thriller Domesticity, which received several nominations and awards on the festival circuit. Since then, I’ve been looking for ways to direct more for the screen and the pandemic lockdowns of 2020 offered me the chance.

Right now, I’m in post production on the screen adaptations of The Class Project and Mediocre White Male, both of which are streaming this summer, and in development on a new horror feature that I can’t tell you about yet.

Audio

I’ve been creating The Legacy Tapes, a podcast exploring how to leave something lasting in the ephemeral medium of theatre, hosted by Exeunt, since 2016.

The shut down of live theatre in 2020 meant that lots of my live work shifted into digital and audio formats to allow people to access it in spite of lockdown restrictions. My production company, Arch 468 has pivoted to producing digital audio experiences that allow audiences to experience immersive stories rooted in a particular landscape and, unsurprisingly, I have been directing and producing some of them! You can listen to This Is Who We Are our walking trail of immersive audio dramas online or by visiting the Thames Barrier Park to hunt for our QR code installations that will be available in perpetuity. From May 2021, you can also experience HERstory, a city wide audio trail exploring women’s stories during the Covid-19 pandemic, commissioned by Brighton Festival.
